What canvas do professional artists use? For works that would hang in galleries etc?
Q. I'm talking about high end paintings here. Like would hang in the Tate Modern, or the MoMA, or would be for sale in top galleries. It seems to me, that the only real difference in professional paintings, are the wood frames the canvas is stretched on are of better quality and finish. The canvas itself seems to be the same. Are there any works in galleries, where the artist has simply painted on a pre-stretched, reasonable- quality canvas, bought primed etc from their local art shop. Is it possible to use these pre-stretched and primed canvases, bought on the high street so to speak, so long as they have gallery edges, for a professional painting you wish to sell? I'd appreciate any informed answers, or if any artists would help me.… [cont.]

A. you got it, the canvas itself is pretty much the same, the only difference is the stretcher. When you make your own stretcher you end up with a sturdier product, as well as a custom size. Using a pre-stretched canvas is perfectly acceptable, although to get the right surface you might want to apply more gesso. Pre-primed canvases don't always have the right surface for the work to be done, but if its the right dimensions then the surface is fairly easy to fix with gesso and sand paper (sanding the surface is a common technique to acheive a smooth surface) One difference will be found with older paintings, especially portraits. They are actually painted on linen, not cotton canvas. Linen has a finer surface and allows for smaller detail… [cont.]
