cowboy town on an island of Hawaii?
Q. Makawao, Hawaii is a cowboy town with old classic cowboy buildings you would fnd in the western USA the town is obviously very very old before Hawaii was even considered part of the USA,and I don't think there was any white people living on th island at that stage so why is it that it sharesthe excact same culture as towns like deadwood sd, and bandera texas, just a coincedence?

A. Two answers, really. First, even before Hawaii was a state, the cowboy culture came along with the cows (which were definitely not native!). Second, the culture related to chasing cows on horseback is pretty consistent around the world, and is driven more by the needs of the horses and cows than by popular ideas of culture.

A. Part of what you see is the fact that these towns were built about the same time, and the same kind of architecture was widely popular at that time. And later on, when you're constructing new buildings, there is a certain motivation to make the new buildings blend in with the existing buildings. You see the same kind of buildings in downtown Kaunakakai, Molokai--which is not much of a tourist town-- because they were built about the same time, and things just don't change that quickly in Kaunakakai. Also, you realize it's what tourists expect to see when they come. It's like when the Indians were hired to be extras in a Western, they jumped on their horses just so, the director said, "That's great!"and the Indians said, "Yes, just like… [cont.]
