A city is a relatively large and permanent urban settlement. Although there is no agreement on how a city is distinguished from a town within general English language meanings, many cities have a particular administrative, legal, or historical status based on local law.

For example, an article of incorporation approved by the local state legislature distinguishes a city government from a town in Massachusetts. In the United Kingdom and parts of the Commonwealth of Nations, a city is traditionally a settlement with a royal charter. Historically, in Europe, a city was understood to be an urban settlement with a cathedral, hence the official status of St David's as a city in the United Kingdom despite its population of 1,797 in 2001.

Cities generally have advanced systems for sanitation, utilities, land usage, housing, and transportation. The concentration of development greatly facilitates interaction between people and businesses, benefiting both parties in the process. A big city or metropolis usually has associated suburbs and exurbs. Such cities are usually associated with metropolitan areas and urban sprawl, creating numerous business commuters traveling to urban centers of employment. Once a city sprawls far enough to reach another city, this region can be deemed a conurbation or megalopolis.

What is the difference between a global city and a world city?
Q. My textbook (A Sociology of Globalization by Saskia Sassen) says that most global cities are also world cities, but some are not world cities in the full sense of the term. It also says that world cities refer to a type of city that has been seen over the centuries, particularly in a lot earlier periods in Asia or European colonial centers. I still don't get what the difference is. When I looked it up online, Wikipedia said that they are the same thing, but I need to know the difference.

A. They are basically the same thing. However, a world city is usually city who had influence in the past and still has influence today. For example, older cities such as Paris, Engalnd, Shanghai, and Tokyo are considered world cities. They were influencial hundreds of years ago and still ahve influence today. While newer places ( less then 300 years old) such as New York, Miami, Los Angeles etc are more like global cities. They have a global influence but they aren't that old.

What northeast city is great to stay during the holiday break and is also inexpensive?
Q. I am not a big fan of the holidays. I just want to roam alone somewhere in the northeast. I live in New York City so I would like to take a bus or train to Philly or Boston, etc. My goal is to site see, meet new people, and bring in the New Year. I would like some suggestions as to which cities were fun for a young college female student who is low on funds.

A. Of the two you mention, my recommendation is Philadelphia. The train station is a short walk from the core of the city. Hotel prices aren't outrageous and there is lots to see and do. Philly, like Boston is full of historical sites to visit, shopping galore and more. I find it a bit less expensive than Boston. If you are willing to try something different, check out Montreal. The exchange rate isn't as good as it used to be, but this is a great city to visit and not too far by train from NYC.

What city within 100 miles of San Francisco has the highest average temp in October?
Q. I live in San Francisco and I'm looking to rent a house with a pool or on a lake for Columbus Day weekend this October, and want guaranteed warm weather. Where's the best weather? The city or town doesn't have to be scenic or touristy; we just want to have a nice weekend by a pool.

A. Gilroy and Hollister get warm, but in mid-late fall it gets pretty mild. I used to live there too, so I know that it is close enough to the coast to get a nice cooling breeze in the afternoon, and a sweater is necessary in the evening. The farther inland you go, the hotter it will get. I went to college at Davis, and a typical early October day could be 90 or higher, and it won't start cooling down until midnight. The farther away from the Sacramento River Delta you go (north or south of highway 80, basically), it will get even hotter due to the loss of the "delta breeze" that keeps Davis and Vacaville weather at a moderate 90ish most of the time. Looking at a map, Modesto, Roseville, Merced, and Yuba City look promising. The hottest… [cont.]
