Literature is the art of written works. Literally translated, the word means "acquaintance with letters" (from Latin littera letter), and therefore the academic study of literature is known as Letters (as in the phrase "Arts and Letters"). In Western culture the most basic written literary types include fiction and nonfiction.

How is the Nobel prize in literature decided?
Q. Does the authour receive a nobel prize for a particular book or is it for his total literature. Similarly, what about Pulitzer prize and the booker prize. Who is the last Nobel Prize winner for literature?

A. Generally it's based on the body of work as a whole, but specific works are often cited. With the Nobel Prize, it goes to an author from any country who, in the words of Alfred Nobel, produced "the most outstanding work of an idealistic tendency". Each year the Swedish Academy sends out requests for nominations of candidates for the Nobel Prize in Literature. Members of the Academy, members of literature academies and societies, professors of literature and language, former Nobel literature laureates, and the presidents of writers' organizations are all allowed to nominate a candidate. Thousands of requests are sent out each year, and about fifty proposals are returned.By April, the Academy narrows the field to around twenty candidates,… [cont.]

Is it advisable to study A-Level English Literature at home?
Q. I'm a Year 12 student, just about to take my GCSEs, and really want to do English Literature for my A-Levels. The problem is that my school may not be running it, and so I have to consider teaching myself. I would have the help and guidance of my teachers, so i was just wondering if anyone else had done it, and whether they would recommend it or not?

A. If you are already doing 3 a levels then I wouldn't suggest an additional a level via homestudy, as you'll be bogged down with work. English language is one of the better courses to do independently as there is a wealth of resources online. It is unusual for a school not to offer it as an a level. Have you considered different schools or colleges?
